No matter how much planning went into your recent camping trip, there is a very good chance that something didn’t go as planned. Depending on how big of an issue it was, it likely impacted the rest of your time at the campgrounds. Being aware that things happen unexpectedly helps you better prepare for the worst so no matter what occurs, you’ll always have a good time.

Bad weather or a sudden illness can turn the best camping trip into something totally different if you let it get to you. Instead, make the most of the time you have left and be aware that it could rain the entire time you visit or your young child may get a bellyache from eating too many S’mores and want to stay back at the tent rather than play. Being aware of the little things that could happen along the way makes for a better experience overall.

Here are some things you can do to make the most of your camping trip when things don’t go as planned:

Play card or board games inside the tent.

There are many games that come in travel sizes that are perfect for camping. Start collecting some of your favorites and bring them with you on your trip. You can also come up with your own. That way, if it does rain, you’ll have something fun to do until the sun comes back out.

Do a craft activity rather than one that requires a lot of physical stamina.

If your little one doesn’t feel up to running or playing laser tag, opt to do a fun craft activity instead. Pack along a glue stick, a pair of safety scissors, a magazine, and a notebook so they can make their own travel journal. It’s a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Focus on deepening the connection with your family by telling stories.

Take turns telling stories or asking questions and inviting answers. That way, everyone feels like they’ve had a chance to speak. Focus on being good listeners as well as speakers. It will strengthen the bond you have with your spouse and children.
